Mount Athos

Mount Athos is an autonomous part of the Greek State, located on the peninsula of Mount Athos in Halkidiki. It includes the twenty Holy Monasteries, their accessories and various shops and services. Its status and mode of operation are defined in detail, in parallel with the Constitution of Greece, with the Statutory Charter of Mount Athos of May 10, 1924. Since 1988 it is included in the list of World Monuments Of Cultural Heritage.

What is Mount Athos?

Completely outlined is a living worshipful and peaceful community with a continuous and uninterrupted presence for centuries. It consists of 20 Monasteries, Hermitages, cells and seats scattered throughout the peninsula. The monasteries based on the class are:

There are daily KTEL buses from Athens to Thessaloniki. From there there are daily itineraries to Halkidiki. Arriving in Halkidiki you can go to Mount Athos by ferry boat from Ouranoupolis or Ierissos.

* To visit Mount Athos (men only), you must follow a specific procedure. By calling the Mount Athos pilgrims' office in Thessaloniki (tel. 2310 252575) they will issue you the accommodation, which you must request a month in advance.
